Adaptive Design Association’s Corporate Volunteer Experiences offer hands-on, expert-led opportunities for teams to collaborate, problem-solve, and make a tangible impact for children with disabilities, right here in NYC.
A Team Experience With Real Impact
In this hands-on workshop, your team will help create custom adaptive tools that support participation, independence, and joy for children and adults with disabilities. Using simple materials and guided instruction, participants work together to make practical tools that have a meaningful impact in everyday life.
No prior experience needed. Just curiosity, teamwork, and a commitment to community.
Purpose-Driven Team Building
Whether your organization focuses on disability inclusion, education, healthcare, creativity, or community engagement, this workshop offers a hands-on way to turn those values into action. Teams work side-by-side to build adaptive tools that directly support children, families, and schools.
Your participation also helps fund the continued design and fabrication of custom adaptive devices for schools and educational programs that need them most.
Programs are designed for groups of 15–20 participants and start at $5,000.
What your team will do
During this immersive, hands-on experience, your team will:
- Step inside our adaptive design studio and connect directly with our designers
- Learn and apply hands-on skills like cardboard carpentry or circuitry
- Build custom equipment that supports children with disabilities
- Strengthen team connection while gaining insight into urgent access needs in our community
The power of cardboard
Cardboard may seem ordinary, but in our workshop it becomes transformational. During the volunteer experience, participants learn how an abundant, low-cost, and widely available material can be used to design highly personalized tools that support learning, access, and independence for children with disabilities.
As teams build together, they don’t just strengthen relationships with one another they also gain a new understanding of adaptive design, creative problem-solving, and the power of resourcefulness. Cardboard becomes a teaching tool, a design material, and a reminder that meaningful solutions don’t require expensive technology, just thoughtful design and human-centered thinking.
By the end of the day, you’ll never look at recycling day in New York City the same way again. Around here, cardboard is beige gold.

Adaptive Design partners with teachers across New York City who understand the unique needs of their students but often lack the time or resources to create specialized tools themselves. Through our Corporate Volunteer Experience, teams help bring those ideas to life by building adaptive equipment inspired by real classroom requests.
