Chuckie's 'Do Everything' Chair

Adaptive Design

Chuckie is an active teen who recently hit a growth spurt. His strong arms are now the power center of his body. He has a care team that works with him nearly every day, helping Chuckie learn how to harness the power of his upper body, learn to move more independently and continue to expand his world. His care team approached ADA, requesting that a chair be designed that would encourage Chuckie to use his body more independently and provide a safe place for him to recover when he has seizures.

“We had a real challenge thinking about what would be best for Chuckie,” Said ADA Designer Eric Gottshall. “He’s growing like a weed, so we needed to make a chair that could grow with him. The design needed to be sturdy and comfortable, encouraging him to use his arms. The chair also needed to recline quickly and provide support when he has unexpected seizures. I needed to make Chuckie an Everything Chair”.

Eric went to the drawing board and designed a chair, especially for Chuckie. Sturdy wood shaped the frame, with comfortable cushions to support his body's vulnerable parts. “I worked hard to make Chuckie’s chair an intuitive design.” Said Eric “Chuckie has a large, dedicated team of professionals at his school. I wanted to make a chair that could easily be adjusted by anyone who was working with him.”

Chuckie is a careful guy. At first he was not thrilled with the chair, but with time, his care team helped him to learn to trust and relax in it. After several months of work, Chuckie now loves his chair. He’s learning to transition in and out of the seat using his arms and is getting stronger by the day.

Chuckie’s chair is absolutely unique. There is not another one in the world like it.
